Natural Hydrogen Exploration

Koloma Australia is advancing methodical, data-driven hydrogen exploration to produce a new clean primary energy source.

A New Low-Carbon Energy Source

Low Cost and Low-Carbon Energy Source

Natural hydrogen (Natural H₂ or NH₂) is a revolutionary form of energy, signalling the first
new primary energy source the world has identified since nuclear power.

We're combining global expertise in NH₂ exploration and energy commercialisation
with Australian geoscience to lead the nation towards NH₂ production.

Below the Earth's surface lies a vast, untapped resource that offers
a low-cost solution to the growing global energy problem.
Alongside industry leader Koloma Inc, we have
the right team and partners to unlock this opportunity.

What is Natural H₂

Natural (or geologic) H₂ is molecular hydrogen (H₂) that's generated through natural processes within the Earth's crust, rather than by industrial or chemical means. It's a clean, low-cost, low-carbon, primary energy source.

  • Generated naturally, deep underground
  • Uses minimal land, water and energy to produce
  • Once found, the process to produce and handle hydrogen is safe and well understood
  • Low-cost, low-carbon energy
  • Essential for competitively decarbonising critical industries (steel, alumina, transport, ammonia, methanol, power)

Natural H₂ advantages

Cost: significantly lower cost than most alternatives

Emissions: minimal GHG intensity compared to alternative sources*

Reliability: stable 24/7 production without interruptions that challenge many low-carbon alternatives

* Subject to H₂ concentration, associated gas composition & embodied CO₂

What Natural H₂ isn't

This isn't Green Hydrogen, which is an energy-intensive process that uses electrolytic hydrogen production to split water molecules to release H₂. Although clean, the Green Hydrogen process is incredibly inefficient as it requires large land, water or energy resources, such as wind, solar or hydro.

  • Not a high-cost secondary energy source, e.g. Green Hydrogen
  • No CO₂ by-product
  • Does not require fracking
  • Does not rely on subsidies to be competitive
  • Does not require large quantities of land, water or energy
Prospective use cases for hydrogen in Australia — large-scale export industries and domestic decarbonisation sectors

Where will Natural H₂ be used

Australia's National Hydrogen Strategy (NHS) target is 15 Mtpa of H₂ production by 2050 for domestic and export sales.

Koloma is targeting competitive supply of Natural H₂ to customers in key demand sectors identified in the NHS.

Australia's gas pipeline regulations also provide an immediate opportunity to blend competitively priced, low-carbon Natural H₂ into Australia's domestic gas network for rapid commercialisation.

5 mid-sized discoveries from Koloma's Australian portfolio would meet over 30% of Australia's NHS target.

Rethinking the Energy Landscape

Natural H₂ source rock is very different than the fossilised sources that form oil and gas. Actually, there is little overlap in places where it is found. To find large commercial resources, a new wave of technology-driven frontier exploration is needed.
Discoveries will be transformational, both for H₂ markets and for the energy industry globally.

We know where to Explore

Australian states compared across Technical, Regulatory, and Commercial: TAS — highly prospective GH₂ geology; supportive government and regulators; ready-for-GH₂ market. SA — favourable scalable geology; leading global GH₂ jurisdiction; near major infrastructure and demand centres. WA — elevated GH₂ occurrences; the leading energy state; local mines and towns. Others — currently screening high-graded subset of AOIs.

Australia's Opportunity

A Continent Built for Natural Hydrogen

Australia is home to some of the oldest and most extensive geological formations on Earth. These ancient cratons — the stable, iron-rich cores of the continent — are precisely the environments where natural hydrogen is generated and trapped.

Koloma Australia is committed to exploring responsibly and rigorously, in partnership with Australian communities, landowners, and partners.
